How to identify freezing of gait (FoG)?
What is freezing of gait?
Freezing of gait (FoG) can be defined as brief, intermittent episodes of inability to initiate or maintain locomotion or perform a turn. FoG in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) could be related to a functional compromise of the frontal lobe.
Freezing of gait (also called ‘magnetisation’) is a transient phenomenon when the affected person cannot take a step because they are unable to lift their feet off the ground; The feeling of having their feet ‘stuck’ to the ground
Under what circumstances do they occur?
Episodes usually occur when entering a corridor, with changes in light or shadows on the floor, with a change of texture or pattern on the floor, with stairs or narrow entrances such as a lift, among others.
The freeze usually lasts only for a few seconds but it is one of the most frustrating and dangerous symptoms of Parkinson's disease. You may not always be able to prevent a freezing episode, but you can recognise when this symptom of Parkinson's may occur and what you can do to minimize injury.
How can FoG be treated?
Obstacle training, treadmill training, general exercise, action observation training, and conventional physical therapy can provide immediate and real benefits to people with PD who experience freezing episodes.
Some audiovisual incentives such as those produced by the pauto® walking stick help to recover gait by acting on procedural memory.
